What we learned:
Phonics: We learned the letters Hh, Rr, and Dd this week. We also reviewed all of the letters and sounds we have learned so far.
Reading: We read the book "Horrible Bear" and learned about characters. We learned how to make mental images and ask questions to help us understand the story better. We discussed the author's purpose while reading books about apples. We did an apple taste test and made applesauce!
Writing: We learned how to use labels and captions in our writing to help our readers understand our pictures.
Math: This week we compared groups up to five, we learned which group is greater and which group is less.
High Frequency Words: We learned the word “we” and reviewed the word "the". We also learned that open syllables are words that end in a vowel and are not closed by a consonant. This makes the vowel say it's name. For example: we, be, he, she, me. We have learned the following words: I, a, am, the, like, eat, in, it, did, into, and, we. Continue to practice reading and writing these words at home.
Your student brought home a small book called "I Like Fruit". With this book, we practiced finding the first and last words in sentences. We talked about how a period tells us that the sentence is finished. We also looked through the book to find high frequency words that we have already learned: "I", "like", and "the". Students are not expected to read the names of the fruits since they are not decodable. Instead, we used this book to find features of sentences and to practice tracking print from left to right.
