What we learned this week:

  • Reading: We started our new reading unit: Holidays and Celebrations. We read a book called “Celebrating Earth Day” and discussed cause and effect. Ask your student to tell you the central message or main idea of the book.

  • Writing: Students were introduced to opinion writing. We brainstormed what we have opinions about and learned the difference between a fact and an opinion. We also learned how to spell the word “because” and use it in our writing.

  • Math: We took our Topic 7 test and started Topic 8: More Addition and Subtraction. Lesson 8-1 is about decomposing 5 to solve problems. Example problem: Alex plants 5 daisies in a flowerpot. Some are yellow. Some are red. Use counters to show one way to break apart a group of 5 daisies. Complete the equation to show how many red and how many yellow daisies. 5 = _ + _ We are now working through our math lessons in 3 small groups. I will choose certain problems on their worksheet to do in class with me. You can finish the ones we did not complete together at home.
